Materials Microscopes

Metallurgical Microscopes are used throughout the sciences and industry. They are made to observe shiny and/or flat metal or other surfaces.  The light shines through the objective reflects off the surface and the reflected light is observed, this is why they are also called reflected light microscopes.  They require polished, absolutely flat specimens.  Materials microscopes have reflected light and transmitted (bottom) light and so can look at a greater range of subjects.  Metallurgical microscopes can also be inverted so large specimens can be mounted.  There are some specialist versions which are designed for looking at silicon wafers.
